Fasting
Jesus With Us
Scripture:
Matthew 6:16-18 (NLT)
“And when you fast, don’t make it obvious, as the hypocrites do, for they try to look miserable and disheveled so people will admire them for their fasting. I tell you the truth, that is the only reward they will ever get. But when you fast, comb your hair and wash your face. Then no one will notice that you are fasting, except your Father, who knows what you do in private. And your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.”
Life Lessons from Jesus:
Jesus continues with attitude and action. He tells us that when hypocrites fast, they make sure that everyone knows what they are doing. Jesus shows that the purpose of fasting is to draw us closer into His presence. Fasting was never meant to be a public display of our religion, rather the purpose of fasting is to deepen our relationship with Jesus. Fasting isn’t meant for demonstration but for transformation. The results of fasting should be revealed through our lives while it remains a secret on our lips. Jesus again tells us that those who fast for public admiration, “...that is the only reward they will ever get.” Our reward should be motivated by our relationship with Jesus not the recognition of others.
The WAY:
Consider these questions as you reflect on today’s reading:
Have I ever fasted as part of my spiritual life?
Am I willing to fast in order to grow closer to Jesus? What might happen if I do?
Prayer:
Jesus, keep me humble and my motives pure. Thank You for the spiritual discipline of fasting given to deepen my hunger for You. I praise You for being a personal Savior and friend. Help me to seek You with all of my heart. In Your name, Amen.
