Scripture:
JOHN 1:35-42 (NLT)
The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!” When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?” They said, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?” “Come,” he replied, “and you will see.” So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon. Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ). And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which, when translated, is Peter).
Life Lessons from Jesus:
The hope of better things and the desire to live a purposeful life—these two yearnings drive people to search, to put themselves out there. They open minds and hearts, preparing people for change. When two followers of John the Baptist heard him identify Jesus as the Lamb of God for the second time in two days, they were ready to give up everything and follow Jesus. In fact, they were so ready that one of them, Andrew, immediately ran to his brother to share the word and invite him along. Andrew’s actions give us a blueprint of how to share our own good news: Just go and do it. Invite others. Express your excitement. These men’s hearts and minds were already open, so they could throw themselves into the fray at the announcement that their Savior had arrived. They had already been searching for something better, something with purpose—so when they found it, they were ready to act. We, too, must pursue a life lived with purpose and be ready for change. New opportunities may be right around the corner. We must keep our hearts open to God’s movement and share the good news of Jesus with those around us as we walk with our Savior. We just might inspire someone to come along with us on our journey, as Andrew did.
The WAY:
Consider these questions as you reflect on today’s reading:
What is the most important news you’ve ever shared with someone?
When have you been invited to “come and see” something interesting, amazing, or wonderful?
In your own words, what were the disciples here looking for?
Prayer:
God, thank You for sending John the Baptist to boldly identify Your Son, the Lamb of God. Thank You for his boldness to declare Your name and share the good news with those around him. I pray for an open heart to continue seeking more of You and the life You offer. In Jesus’s name, amen.
