Scripture:
John 3:22-36 (NLT)
Then Jesus and His disciples left Jerusalem and went into the Judean countryside. Jesus spent some time with them there, baptizing people. At this time John the Baptist was baptizing at Aenon, near Salim, because there was plenty of water there; and people kept coming to him for baptism. (This was before John was thrown into prison.) A debate broke out between John’s disciples and a certain Jew over ceremonial cleansing. So John’s disciples came to him and said, “Rabbi, the Man you met on the other side of the Jordan River, the One you identified as the Messiah, is also baptizing people. And everybody is going to Him instead of coming to us.” John replied, “No one can receive anything unless God gives it from heaven. You yourselves know how plainly I told you, ‘I am not the Messiah. I am only here to prepare the way for Him.’ It is the bridegroom who marries the bride, and the bridegroom’s friend is simply glad to stand with him and hear his vows. Therefore, I am filled with joy at His success. He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less.” “He has come from above and is greater than anyone else. We are of the earth, and we speak of earthly things, but He has come from heaven and is greater than anyone else. He testifies about what He has seen and heard, but how few believe what He tells them! Anyone who accepts His testimony can affirm that God is true. For He is sent by God. He speaks God’s words, for God gives Him the Spirit without limit. The Father loves His Son and has put everything into His hands. And anyone who believes in God’s Son has eternal life. Anyone who doesn’t obey the Son will never experience eternal life but remains under God’s angry judgment.”
Life Lessons from Jesus:
For many of us, it can be hard to let go of the spotlight once we’ve secured it. Once things get going, it’s easy to forget how or why we started and who helped us along the way. In a world where we compete for followers on social media, we can imagine what it’s like to lose followers. More difficult is imagining intentionally instructing our followers to follow someone else, especially after all the work and time we’ve put in toward earning their loyalty. Yet that’s just what John the Baptist does in this passage. John the Baptist had many followers. He was essentially a sold-out success as a forerunner for the coming Messiah. At the same time, he knew his place, and he never forgot why he was doing the work he did. John wanted everyone to move toward Jesus. And he kept that end goal in sight. When other people tried to create discord by saying Jesus was baptizing more people, John was unperturbed. His unselfish nature kept him from accepting personal praise or participating in petty jealousy. Instead, he stayed steady and pointed to Jesus, reminding others that Jesus was the whole reason John was there doing what he was doing. John compared his relationship with Jesus to that of a groomsman standing next to the groom. Jesus, of course, was the groom, and His church was the bride. John’s purpose was to support and aid in any way he could to ensure the two came together successfully. This selfless attitude is reflected in his words in John 3:30: “He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less” (NLT). John’s stature in relation to Jesus is a model for our own faith journeys. As we let Jesus become more and more in our lives, we’ll find that our own self-seeking and otherwise destructive behaviors become less and less.
The WAY:
Consider these questions as you reflect on today’s reading:
When have you had to play a role you were not comfortable with?
Did any insecurities factor into your discomfort? If so, in what way?
In this passage, what stands out to you about John the Baptist?
Prayer:
Thank You, Jesus, for the humility of John the Baptist. Let me be just as humble in my walk with You. I pray for more of You in my life. Help me to always remember what my purpose is and to live this life with that in mind. In Your name, amen.
