Scripture:
Mark 3:7-12 (CEV)
Jesus led his disciples down to the shore of the lake. Large crowds followed him from Galilee, Judea, and Jerusalem. People came from Idumea, as well as other places east of the Jordan River. They also came from the region around the towns of Tyre and Sidon. All of these crowds came because they had heard what Jesus was doing. He even had to tell his disciples to get a boat ready to keep him from being crushed by the crowds. After Jesus had healed many people, the other sick people begged him to let them touch him. And whenever any evil spirits saw Jesus, they would fall to the ground and shout, “You are the Son of God!” But Jesus warned the spirits not to tell who he was. SEE ALSO: MATTHEW 4:23–25; 12:15–21
Life Lessons from Jesus:
It’s incredible how quickly and how far the news of Jesus traveled simply by word of mouth. Positive stories of personal experiences mean so much to people, as we can see in today’s passage. The accounts of healing and miracles spreading throughout the region brought multitudes of people—so many that Jesus had to get off land in order to avoid getting hurt. Imagine an arena of people flocking to see a popular musician today. That’s how eager people were to see Jesus. It couldn’t have been easy for most of them to travel to see Him, either, but they had family and friends showing up in their hometowns healed, hopeful, and raving about Jesus, so they knew the trip would be worth the effort. In today’s world, bad news often spreads faster than good news, especially as it makes its rounds via the Internet. It can be much harder for stories of hope to go viral. One of the best ways we can spread and confirm the hope of Jesus is by living a life that demonstrates Christ’s love. We can personally share what’s happened in our lives and in the lives of people we know. Seeing transformed people up close is a game changer.
The WAY:
Consider these questions as you reflect on today’s reading:
Why do you think Jesus asked for a boat?
In your view, why were so many people seeking out Jesus?
Why did Jesus command the spirits not to reveal who He was?
Prayer:
Jesus, I am in awe of Your power and might. You have no rival, and You stand above all others. I pray that my life would be an example to other people, showing Your power to heal and bring about change. I pray that the way I live my life would bring hope to others as well. In Your name, amen.
