Blessed are the Poor in Spirit
Jesus With Us
< BACK
Scripture:
Matthew 5:3; Luke 6:20 (NLT)
Matthew 5:3 “God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.” Luke 6:20 Then Jesus turned to his disciples and said, “God blesses you who are poor, for the Kingdom of God is yours.
Life Lessons from Jesus:
“God blesses those who are poor in Spirit and realize their need for Him, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.” There are several biblical words that translate in English as “poor.” One word speaks of poverty like the poor widow with her two mites found in Luke 21. However, another term for poor describes someone who is absolutely destitute. They have nothing to their name. This is the term that described the poor man Lazarus found in Luke 16, and this term is the same word found in Matthew 5:3. This word “poor” means “to cringe, to cower, and to shrink back.” It implies being as helpless as a beggar, with no sense of pride, only an instinct for survival. Wow, what a picture! Jesus said that we will be blessed when we realize He is all we need. We have everything when we possess nothing but what God provides.
The WAY:
Consider these questions as you reflect on today’s reading:
How does the world measure a good life?
Can people have wealth and still receive the blessings of God? Why or why not?
How can we balance physical needs with our walk with Jesus?
Prayer:
Jesus, please help me to empty myself of everything before You. Never let me forget that it is through You that I have anything. Let me live “destitute of my pride and self-interests.” I love You, Lord. In Your name, Amen.
