Scripture:
Matthew 6:25-34 (NLT)
“That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing? Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your Heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are? Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?” “And why worry about your clothing? Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, He will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith?” “So don’t worry about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?’ These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your Heavenly Father already knows all your needs. Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and He will give you everything you need.” “So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.” Matthew 6:25-34 (NLT)
Life Lessons from Jesus:
The Bible is timeless. Although the words were written long, long ago, the lesson fits today. Our reading today explores worry. Jesus addresses the following categories of worry: finances, food, fashion, and the future. Today, these are four areas that can still keep us up at night. Worry can be defined as “trying to solve your problems your way.” The root of worry is a lack of faith. Faith and worry cannot co-exist. Either we trust God, or we worry about life. Worry is both foolish and fruitless because it involves a lack of faith. To worry less, we have to trust more. This is much easier to say than to do! The world gives us measures of success. What if we don’t live up to these standards? Our peace comes with listening and trusting.
The WAY:
Consider these questions as you reflect on today’s reading:
Which area of my life keeps me awake most often?
How can my faith help me understand how to let go of my fears and trust?
Prayer:
Father, thank You for loving me more than I deserve. I pray that I will rely on You with my complete being. Give me faith to trust You more. Anytime I am tempted to worry, help me, Lord, to put my confidence in Your magnificent power. I praise You that You are more than able to handle anything. In Jesus name, Amen.
