Scripture:
Matthew 11:1, Mark 6:12-13, Luke 9:6
MATTHEW 11:1 (NLT) When Jesus had finished giving these instructions to his twelve disciples, he went out to teach and preach in towns throughout the region. MARK 6:12–13 (NLT) So the disciples went out, telling everyone they met to repent of their sins and turn to God. And they cast out many demons and healed many sick people, anointing them with olive oil. LUKE 9:6 (NLT) So they began their circuit of the villages, preaching the Good News and healing the sick.
Life Lessons from Jesus:
In Luke 9:6, the phrase “preaching the Good News” comes from the Greek word euaggelizo. It is from this word that we get the English term “evangelism” for describing the witness and spread of the gospel. Euaggelizo was a word used in the ancient world to pronounce victory over an enemy. When an army was victorious, a messenger would run from the battle back to the people and announce the good news of their triumph. It would be a time of celebration as the conquering city received word that the enemy had been defeated. Families rejoiced, knowing that they wouldn’t be enslaved by their enemy. Victory had secured their freedom. In this passage, the disciples similarly hurried out to tell people the good news. And they were giving a message of victory, news of freedom. Are we doing the same? It is up to us to make sure we are announcing the same good news—not an announcement of rules, exclusion, or fire and brimstone. This message is a celebration of life and hope and overcoming. It’s a message of Jesus’s victory over our captivity to sin and death.
The WAY:
Consider these questions as you reflect on today’s reading:
In what ways is Jesus’s message a message of victory?
Why is it so important how we share the news of Christ with others?
How might you share the message of Jesus’s victory with someone you know?
Prayer:
Jesus, help me to spread the good news - the victory and the hope that come from a relationship with You- with others. Thank You for making Your victory over sin our reality. Thank You for freeing us from our spiritual debt. In Your name, amen.
