Scripture:
Matthew 16:1-4, Mark 8:11-13
MATTHEW 16:1-4 (NLT) One day the Pharisees and Sadducees came to test Jesus, demanding that he show them a miraculous sign from heaven to prove his authority. He replied, “You know the saying, ‘Red sky at night means fair weather tomorrow; red sky in the morning means foul weather all day.’ You know how to interpret the weather signs in the sky, but you don’t know how to interpret the signs of the times! Only an evil, adulterous generation would demand a miraculous sign, but the only sign I will give them is the sign of the prophet Jonah.” Then Jesus left them and went away. MARK 8:11-13 (NLT) When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had arrived, they came and started to argue with him. Testing him, they demanded that he show them a miraculous sign from heaven to prove his authority. When he heard this, he sighed deeply in his spirit and said, “Why do these people keep demanding a miraculous sign? I tell you the truth, I will not give this generation any such sign.” So he got back into the boat and left them, and he crossed to the other side of the lake.
Life Lessons from Jesus:
It’s hard not to feel exasperated when we read about these demands from the religious leaders. By this point in time, Jesus had already given signs. He had done His works right in front of their noses, and they knew it. Yet, even though they had witnessed His power and authority time and time again, they still asked for another sign. It was the religious crowd that frustrated Jesus the most. He didn’t need their personal validation to be who He already was. He was the Messiah, whether they accepted that reality or not. They chose to disregard the signs that were already there. They ignored common sense as they tried to take the situation into their own hands and influence it. We humans can be so blind to truth that goes against what we want or hope for. We do everything we can to ignore that truth or to mold our situations into something over which we have more control. We might even become angry with God or try to test Him. As a result, we miss everything He is trying to show us—the truth that’s right under our noses. The signs can be all around us, but when we’re in this state of denial, we don’t notice or acknowl- edge them. This is why it’s so important to let go of our desire to control every- thing, take a step back, open our hearts and minds, and, with fresh eyes, take a second look at what God is saying and doing.
The WAY:
Consider these questions as you reflect on today’s reading:
What do you think Jesus is saying about signs in this passage?
When have you ignored something real just because you didn’t want it to be true? What happened when you finally acknowledged that it was true anyway?
Have you been resisting or ignoring any truths God has been showing you? If so, how can you change your response to Him today?
Prayer:
Jesus, I’m sorry that I sometimes ignore what You are doing because it’s not what I thought or hoped it would be. I know You are present all around me and are always revealing Yourself in various ways. I pray that You would open my eyes to Your presence so I can appreciate what You are doing in my life, all the time. In Your name, amen.
