Scripture:
Mark 8:22-26
MARK 8:22–26 (MSG) They arrived at Bethsaida. Some people brought a sightless man and begged Jesus to give him a healing touch. Taking him by the hand, he led him out of the village. He put spit in the man’s eyes, laid hands on him, and asked, “Do you see anything?” He looked up. “I see men. They look like walking trees.” So Jesus laid hands on his eyes again. The man looked hard and realized that he had recovered perfect sight, saw everything in bright, twenty-twenty focus. Jesus sent him straight home, telling him, “Don’t enter the village.”
Life Lessons from Jesus:
Jesus does all things perfectly—He does them fully and appropriately, with intention. He could have healed this man instantly, but He chose to heal him gradually, in two stages. This progressive miracle, in contrast to an immediate miracle, is similar to the gradual spiritual growth of Jesus’s disciples. As they continued to follow Jesus, their spiritual eyes were opened wider. This progression gave them time to fully process everything, to understand the nuances and meaning behind what Jesus was saying and doing, and to learn Jesus’s character. It was all leading to a fuller revelation of Him. Their faith wouldn’t have been the same otherwise. Similarly, as we begin to follow Jesus, God starts to open our spiritual eyes. Slowly, over the years, He reveals more of Himself and His ways, and we grow and mature in our Christian walk. So, don’t worry about rushing things. The process is a perfect part of God’s plan.
The WAY:
Consider these questions as you reflect on today’s reading:
Why do you think Jesus leads the man out of the village to heal him?
What are the benefits of learning things gradually or getting to know someone over time?
What are some ways God has opened your spiritual eyes?
Prayer:
Jesus, thank You for walking with me daily through this journey of life. I know I need Your gentle reminders that developing maturity takes time. Give me patience as I work through the challenges of each day. Help me to release my frustration to You when I wish I were farther along in my spiritual walk than I am and to trust in Your faithfulness to transform me into Your like- ness. In Your name, amen.
