LOVE JESUS, LOVE LIKE JESUS.
Leg 2 Day 72
Part of the Family
Jesus Among Us

Scripture:
Mark 9:38-41, Luke 9:49-50
MARK 9:38–41 (NLT) John said to Jesus, “Teacher, we saw someone using your name to cast out demons, but we told him to stop because he wasn’t in our group.” “Don’t stop him!” Jesus said. “No one who performs a miracle in my name will soon be able to speak evil of me. Anyone who is not against us is for us. If anyone gives you even a cup of water because you belong to the Messiah, I tell you the truth, that person will surely be rewarded.” LUKE 9:49–50 (NLT) John said to Jesus, “Master, we saw someone using your name to cast out demons, but we told him to stop because he isn’t in our group.” But Jesus said, “Don’t stop him! Anyone who is not against you is for you.”
Life Lessons from Jesus:
Human beings like exclusivity. We like being part of something unique. We like feeling special. So, we create barriers against others, closing ourselves off from them with an “us versus them” mentality. But Jesus’s message isn’t meant to be exclusive. It’s not supposed to cater to our feelings of “greatness.” We should never use His message to keep people out. The individual the disciples were talking about was doing the same things the disciples were doing—acting in the name of Jesus—and yet they wanted to stop him because he wasn’t part of their group. Jesus corrected them. As long as we have the same goal of spreading the love of Jesus, we’re part of the same group! Anyone acting with Jesus’s love, kindness, and acceptance shouldn’t be stopped or swayed from doing so. Anyone who loves Jesus, helps out the church, or promotes Jesus’s message in some way, even if they are different from us, should be considered part of the family. Jesus clarified that all acts of service to Him are of equal significance, no matter who they come from. So, if you’re ever feeling like you don’t quite fit in anywhere, don’t worry. You are already confirmed as being part of the group. Keep going!
The WAY:
Consider these questions as you reflect on today’s reading:
What do you believe Jesus’s message was in these passages?
How should we treat other Christians even if they have different opinions from us or come from other church denominations or backgrounds?
How do you think different groups and denominations can overcome the barriers that separate them?
Prayer:
Jesus, forgive us for grouping people into certain categories in our minds. Anyone who acts in love in Your name should be welcomed. Help me to be open-minded, to look for Your love demonstrated in others and accept them as they are. In Your name, amen.
