Standing Our Ground
Jesus Among Us

Scripture:
John 7:45-53
JOHN 7:45–53 (NLT) When the Temple guards returned without having arrested Jesus, the leading priests and Pharisees demanded, “Why didn’t you bring him in?” “We have never heard anyone speak like this!” the guards responded. “Have you been led astray, too?” the Pharisees mocked. “Is there a single one of us rulers or Pharisees who believes in him? This foolish crowd follows him, but they are ignorant of the law. God’s curse is on them!” Then Nicodemus, the leader who had met with Jesus earlier, spoke up. “Is it legal to convict a man before he is given a hearing?” he asked. They replied, “Are you from Galilee, too? Search the Scriptures and see for your- self—no prophet ever comes from Galilee!” Then the meeting broke up, and everybody went home.
Life Lessons from Jesus:
Speaking up for what we believe in can be a lonely road. Whether the matter is about God, our rights, or other people’s rights, it automatically puts us in a precarious position where we have to weigh the costs of speaking out. Nicodemus had gone to meet with Jesus previously, but under cover of darkness. Now, just speaking up and talking reasonably about Jesus’s already-established rights in front of his religious peers puts him at risk. This is no small thing. It could cost him his position and his place in society, and it could possibly insti- gate the anger of very powerful men against him. It can be terrifying to stand our ground when something important is at stake. Even smaller situations, like risking the judgment of a new friend, can be difficult. But our actions reflect our hearts. If we’re abandoning our values and our beliefs at the first sign of resistance, what does that say about the condition of our hearts? Are we really living out what we believe?
The WAY:
Consider these questions as you reflect on today’s reading:
When has someone stood up for you or your rights?
When have you stood up for someone else in this way? Was it difficult? Why or why not?
In what ways have you been supportive of those around you lately? How might you encourage someone this week by coming alongside them with assistance?
Prayer:
Jesus, give me the strength to stand up for You and for others, and let me know You are with me, standing next to me. Don’t let me abandon my values or run away when I’m under pressure or worried about the consequences. I want to unashamedly follow You. You are worth more than anything else in this world. In Your name, amen.
