Leg 3 Day 28
“I Have a Baptism”
Jesus Through Us
< BACK
Scripture:
LUKE 12:49-53
LUKE 12:49-53 (NLT) “I have come to set the world on fire, and I wish it were already burning!  I have a terrible baptism of suffering ahead of me, and I am under a heavy burden until it is accomplished. Do you think I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I have come to divide people against each other!  From now on families will be split apart, three in favor of me, and two against—or two in favor and three against. ‘Father will be divided against son
    and son against father;
mother against daughter
    and daughter against mother;
 and mother-in-law against daughter-in-law
    and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.’”
Life Lessons from Jesus:
As hard as it can be, following Christ wholeheartedly can mean leaving people and other things we love behind. True discipleship divides the sold-outs, who are all in, and the sell-outs, who do whatever is better for them in the moment. Many people who call themselves “Christians” will only follow Him when it is convenient, when they don’t feel they have to give up or change anything. Others are simply complacent; they don’t want to do the work. Any time following Jesus gets uncomfortable, they become unfaithful, they do their own thing. Even when the division, the loss, feels like it might be tearing you apart, keep your eyes on God. Remind yourself what this is all about. The eternal spiritual relationship with God as your Father is more important than any temporary physical relationship on earth, as hard as that can be to hear.
The WAY:
Consider these questions as you reflect on today’s reading:
What do you think Jesus means by, “I have come to set the world on fire”?
How might you have grown complacent in your journey with Jesus?
What has it cost you to follow Him?
Prayer:
Jesus, there are times in my life when I have grown complacent in my journey with You. Please forgive me for the times I’ve walked away from You toward whatever was easier for me. Increase my determination, expand my vision to the things of eternity, so that I would keep making my way toward You always. In Your name, Amen.
