Leg 3 Day 40
“Man Healed on the Sabbath Day”
Jesus Through Us
< BACK
Scripture:
LUKE 14:1-6
LUKE 14:1-6 (NIV) One Sabbath, when Jesus went to eat in the house of a prominent Pharisee, he was being carefully watched.  There in front of him was a man suffering from abnormal swelling of his body.  Jesus asked the Pharisees and experts in the law, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?” But they remained silent. So taking hold of the man, he healed him and sent him on his way. Then he asked them, “If one of you has a child or an ox that falls into a well on the Sabbath day, will you not immediately pull it out?” And they had nothing to say.
Life Lessons from Jesus:
It’s a Sabbath day, Jesus is dining with a leading Pharisee, and as they’re eating, the Bible notes that, “he was being carefully watched.” Now, the language of the New Testament here actually implies that they were looking at Him with malicious intent. And Jesus always knows the motives of our hearts. So, when a sick man appeared, Jesus asked them if the law permitted healing on the Sabbath. When they refused to answer (probably hoping He would do something wrong), Jesus healed the man right in front of them. But He didn’t wait at all for them to react. He immediately followed it up with another question regarding what they would do if someone precious to them were hurt or suffering on the Sabbath. We all know the answer to that. He points out their hypocrisy directly. The first question they would not answer and the second they could not answer. Jesus knew exactly what He was doing. Sometimes He will ask us questions that are hard for us to answer as well. Ones that point out something that isn’t right or is hypocritical in our own lives. Take the time to really reflect when that happens. It’s happening for a reason and He’s pointing out something that needs to change.
The WAY:
Consider these questions as you reflect on today’s reading:
Are there any questions in your life that God is asking but you are refusing to answer?
What is He trying to teach you?
How can you trust Him with the questions you can’t answer?
Prayer:
Jesus, open my heart to all You are teaching me. It can be hard to face up to certain areas in my life that I don’t want anyone to see and that I don’t want to acknowledge myself. Help me to answer You honestly and give me the courage to admit my shortcomings so I can have an honest relationship with You and keep moving forward on my journey with You. In Your name, Amen.
