Leg 3 Day 56
“Duties of a Servant”
Jesus Through Us
< BACK
Scripture:
LUKE 17:7-10
LUKE 17:7-10 (The Message) “Suppose one of you has a servant who comes in from plowing the field or tending the sheep. Would you take his coat, set the table, and say, ‘Sit down and eat’? Wouldn’t you be more likely to say, ‘Prepare dinner; change your clothes and wait table for me until I’ve finished my coffee; then go to the kitchen and have your supper’? Does the servant get special thanks for doing what’s expected of him? It’s the same with you. When you’ve done everything expected of you, be matter-of-fact and say, ‘The work is done. What we were told to do, we did.’”
Life Lessons from Jesus:
Even as our faith grows and we start to see ourselves changing the world around us, we still need to keep in mind who deserves the recognition. After telling His disciples what faith the size of a seed can do—and before any kind of spiritual pride can slip into their hearts—Jesus gives them an analogy to teach them the proper perspective to maintain in a relationship with Him. No Middle Eastern master of the time would allow his servant to take priority over himself. Just because the servant worked hard didn’t mean he had the authority to assume the same position at the table as his master at the end of the day. The servant would come in from a day’s work and continue their role of being a servant. When our faith grows and amazing things happen, we are to give God all the credit and keep on serving Him. It is our privilege to do so, and we must keep that in perspective.
The WAY:
Consider these questions as you reflect on today’s reading:
In what ways have you drawn attention to yourself when it was God who empowered you?
How can we stay humble in our lives and respond to our successes and accomplishments with a servant’s heart?
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, help me to serve You with the humble attitude of a servant. Help me to give You all the recognition when You’re working in my life and never try to take credit for what only You can do. In Your name, Amen.
