Jesus Through Us

Scripture:
JOHN 11:17-27
JOHN 11:17-27 (CEV) When Jesus got to Bethany, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. Bethany was less than three kilometers from Jerusalem,  and many people had come from the city to comfort Martha and Mary because their brother had died. When Martha heard that Jesus had arrived, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed in the house. Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. Yet even now I know that God will do anything you ask.” Jesus told her, “Your brother will live again!” Martha answered, “I know he will be raised to life on the last day, when all the dead are raised.” Jesus then said, “I am the one who raises the dead to life! Everyone who has faith in me will live, even if they die. And everyone who lives because of faith in me will never really die. Do you believe this?” “Yes, Lord!” she replied. “I believe you are the Christ, the Son of God. You are the one we hoped would come into the world.”
Life Lessons from Jesus:
What we may think of as delays or unanswered prayers, God may classify as tests of faith. Or even opportunities to make our faith greater. The longer you follow Him, the more you discover that even His delays are divine. Although tragedy hits all of us at some point, although the waiting game can wear at us, we can choose how to respond. When we don’t understand, we simply have to rest the situation in God’s hands, trust Him, and seek out His comfort. When Jesus finally gets to Bethany, Lazarus has been dead for four days, and Martha’s first comment is pretty pointed. She knew Lazarus could have been saved. In response to Martha’s “Why weren’t You here?” insinuation, Jesus reminds her of who He is. He is the one who raises the dead. He is the one who gives life. We may not always get the answer we want from God, but when it seems like we’re not getting it, do we still have faith in His power? Do we still believe in Him or do we automatically turn away instead of toward Him?
The WAY:
Consider these questions as you reflect on today’s reading:
How can we trust in His power to deliver even when we encounter delays in our lives?
How can we continue to trust in Him even when we don’t get the answer we wanted?
Prayer:
Jesus, thank You for being the resurrection and the life. I believe You have power over death and sickness. I also believe You are the one who gifts me with every next breath. Thank You for sustaining me and watching over me in each moment. In Your name, Amen.
