Jesus Through Us

Scripture:
MATTHEW 19:13-15
MATTHEW 19:13-15 (The Message) One day children were brought to Jesus in the hope that he would lay hands on them and pray over them. The disciples shooed them off. But Jesus intervened: “Let the children alone, don’t prevent them from coming to me. God’s kingdom is made up of people like these.” After laying hands on them, he left. Life Lessons from Jesus:
When the disciples tried to turn away children, Jesus insisted they let them through to Him. Not everyone understands the blessing of children! Maybe His disciples thought He was too busy for kids or that they were a nuisance to Him. Which sounds crazy when you think about Jesus’ love for all of His children, especially those without much of a voice. Jesus wanted to bless them. He wanted to interact with them and made a point of doing so, saying, “Let the children alone, don’t prevent them from coming to me. God’s kingdom is made up of people like these.” He then took time to place His hands on their heads and bless them individually. The Son of the Creator of the Universe wanted the children to know He cared. We should model the example of Jesus in the way we treat children. Do we sometimes get too busy for our own or treat them as if they are a bother to us? Do we get frustrated with other people’s kids and treat them poorly? Jesus wants us to value and appreciate children, even when we’re busy and stressed.
The WAY:
Consider these questions as you reflect on today’s reading:
Do you take time to encourage children?
Do you treat them as a bother or as a blessing? In what ways? What does that say about your relationship with Christ?
Discuss you understanding of Mark 10:15 “God’s kingdom is made up of people like these.”
Prayer:
Jesus, help me to welcome children like You welcome them. Children are a gift from You and their total dependence is a great example of how we come to You in faith. Please give me patience and kindness when I’m around them and help me to be an example of what Your love looks like. In Your name, Amen.
