Scripture:
MATTHEW 22:23-33
MATTHEW 22:23-33 (The Message) That same day, Sadducees approached him. This is the party that denies any possibility of resurrection. They asked, “Teacher, Moses said that if a man dies childless, his brother is obligated to marry his widow and father a child with her. Here’s a case where there were seven brothers. The first brother married and died, leaving no child, and his wife passed to his brother. The second brother also left her childless, then the third—and on and on, all seven. Eventually the wife died. Now here’s our question: At the resurrection, whose wife is she? She was a wife to each of them.” Jesus answered, “You’re off base on two counts: You don’t know what God said, and you don’t know how God works. At the resurrection we’re beyond marriage. As with the angels, all our ecstasies and intimacies then will be with God. And regarding your speculation on whether the dead are raised or not, don’t you read your Bibles? The grammar is clear: God says, ‘I am—not was—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob.’ The living God defines himself not as the God of dead men, but of the living.” Hearing this exchange the crowd was much impressed. Life Lessons from Jesus:
We can only understand God if we actually seek Him out. Not everything will make sense immediately (if anything at all). Much of it will take time and then effort and probably more time. There are a lot of mysteries we won’t understand for quite a while. What we do know is what’s been written and handed down. What we can do is spend time in prayer and actively commit to loving others and being like Jesus in the world. God is a living God. He ties His name to the people He has awarded eternal life. Their lives are not over. And Jesus is the Resurrection and the Life. It makes perfect sense that He spoke often about both this life and the resurrection. The Sadducees were a group in Jesus’ day who focused primarily on just the first five books of the Bible and didn’t believe in resurrection. When asking their own questions to try and trap Jesus (concerning a resurrection they didn’t even believe in), Jesus told them, “Your mistake is that you don’t know the Scriptures, and you don’t know the power of God.” When you are unaware of His Word, you are absent of His power and knowledge. If we want to know God, we have to open our Bibles and dig in. You are already doing that. Congratulations on digging in. Congratulations on your work so far on this journey through Jesus’ life!
The WAY:
Consider these questions as you reflect on today’s reading:
What are your thoughts on God’s title being tied to His eternal nature?
How can our knowledge of God’s Word affect the way we live our lives?
Is there anything about God or how God works that you’d like to know more about? Make a list. Now go out and research them!
Prayer:
Jesus, I want to be a better student of Your Word. A better student of You. I don’t want to miss Your strength and influence in my life because I didn’t put in the effort. I pray that You would make me more like You. Thank You for walking with me on this journey where I can learn more about You and Your life here on earth. In Your name, Amen.
