Scripture:
MATTHEW 24:45-51
MATTHEW 24:45-51 (The Message) “Who here qualifies for the job of overseeing the kitchen? A person the Master can depend on to feed the workers on time each day. Someone the Master can drop in on unannounced and always find him doing his job. A God-blessed man or woman, I tell you. It won’t be long before the Master will put this person in charge of the whole operation.” “But if that person only looks out for himself, and the minute the Master is away does what he pleases—abusing the help and throwing drunken parties for his friends—the Master is going to show up when he least expects it, and it won’t be pretty. He’ll end up in the dump with the hypocrites, out in the cold shivering, teeth chattering.”
Life Lessons from Jesus:
Jesus here compares the servant who always does the job faithfully, whether eyes are on them or not, to one that only cares for themself. The faithful, responsible servant is rewarded when their master returns. The self-centered servant cares so much about their own pleasure that they seek it at the expense of everyone else. Our effect on this world is important. How we move through it is important. We have a responsibility to take care of each other, to not make life harder on other people. As Christians, we are also called to change our hearts and leave our old selves behind, because it’s not all about us. One day, every single one of us will be held accountable for what God has entrusted to us. So what does it really mean to lead a life that is ready for Jesus’s return? It means always being prepared for the unexpected by living life well, day after day, starting immediately. It means living with the welfare of others in mind. It means doing the things Jesus asks of us even if it seems like He’s not checking up on us, even if we think we can get away with something, even if we believe we have time to spare to turn things around eventually. We never know how much time we have left.
The WAY:
Consider these questions as you reflect on today’s reading:
How is your level of responsibility when it comes to living this kind of life, dependably ready every day?
Based on this Scripture, list the characteristics of both a faithful and a corrupt servant.
Prayer:
Jesus, help me to be responsible with everything You’ve given me, to use the talents and resources You’ve entrusted to me to help others and give them hope. I know that the world will be shocked and surprised when You come. I pray that my life will instigate change in the lives of those around me for the better. I want You to find me ready when the time comes. In Your name, Amen.
