Scripture:
MARK 15:33-36
MARK 15:33-36 (NIV) At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.  And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”). When some of those standing near heard this, they said, “Listen, he’s calling Elijah.” Someone ran, filled a sponge with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to take him down,” he said. SEE ALSO: MATTHEW 27:45-49
Life Lessons from Jesus:
Jesus was in excruciating pain as He was nailed to the cross. In fact, the word “excruciating” comes from Latin, meaning “out of the cross.” There was no other word to adequately describe Jesus’s physical, emotional, and spiritual pain. “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?” is the fourth statement He made from the cross. Scholars believe Jesus had been hanging approximately six hours before He said this. These same words were recorded a thousand years before Christ was born by David in Psalm 22:1, and they are the only words He spoke on the cross that both Matthew and Mark put into their accounts. It’s a mystery as to exactly what He meant here, but however you interpret it, one thing is true: Jesus was suffering as He carried the weight of the sins of the world. And through His pain, He still put His trust in God. “My God, My God” is a personal plea to a God who cares, a God who responds. Even when we are faced with great pain and it feels as though God isn’t there, we can follow Jesus’s example and cry out to Him, knowing He is a God who responds, a God we can trust.
The WAY:
Consider these questions as you reflect on today’s reading:
How can the cry of Christ teach you to trust in God’s will for your life no matter the circumstances?
Do you currently cry out to God during hard times? Is there anything that ever prevents you from doing it?
What do you think Jesus’s words meant?
Prayer:
God, thank You for always being there. Remind me of Your presence when I forget and resort to trying to get through life on my own. Jesus, thank You for carrying the weight of my sin. I’m sorry You had to suffer so much. Amen.
