Scripture:
JOHN 12:20-26
JOHN 12:20-26 (NLT) Some Greeks who had come to Jerusalem for the Passover celebration paid a visit to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee. They said, “Sir, we want to meet Jesus.”  Philip told Andrew about it, and they went together to ask Jesus. Jesus replied, “Now the time has come for the Son of Man to enter into his glory. I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat is planted in the soil and dies, it remains alone. But its death will produce many new kernels—a plentiful harvest of new lives. Those who love their life in this world will lose it. Those who care nothing for their life in this world will keep it for eternity.  Anyone who wants to serve me must follow me, because my servants must be where I am. And the Father will honor anyone who serves me.”
Life Lessons from Jesus:
Jesus previously mentioned in multiple situations that His time had not yet come. But here, His position changed. His time had finally come. Jesus was privy to God’s plan, and He accepted His fate to the point where he announced it to His disciples and foretold his coming death with vivid imagery. Seeds must be planted and lose their current state of being in order to become something much greater. When seeds rise again as wheat, they are no longer seeds. They’ve transformed through a form of death. A death to what they were before. But that single stalk of wheat creates more seeds and more wheat. More life. Jesus’s selfless and sacrificial death on the cross would produce an eternal crop of changed lives. In a similar way, we are told to give up our old selves. We let go of who we were to embrace a new life. It’s not that we care for nothing. We care for something greater than ourselves. Our lives are redirected with new purpose and intention.
The WAY:
Consider these questions as you reflect on today’s reading:
Do you feel you’ve lost some elements of your old self for the better? In what ways?
How tightly are you currently gripping the things of this world? Does it sometimes seem too tight?
What could help you focus on more eternal things?
Prayer:
Jesus, it can be hard to let go of the life I had and what I’m used to. Help me to have faith that what You offer is greater. Help me to look toward You so I can let go of my former self, my former life, and accept the changes You bring. The life You bring is greater than anything here. In Your name, Amen.
